I just dealt with my first unhappy customer and it's hitting me hard. I have to admit I got upset and emotional at certain points, which I shouldn't have done, but it's difficult. I put a lot of myself into my work, even if it is just soap.

Fellow sellers, how do you deal with this? I'm looking for helpful hints because I'm struggling with it. I know I have many happy customers, many who come back again, so I know I shouldn't let one really displeased person get me down, but it is. It got sort of personal, sad to say, and it's getting to me.

I know it's been ages since I've posted. Some of you may not even recall you follow this blog and wonder who the heck is showing up randomly in your feed. I'm still here, I just fail at using this and Twitter for sure.

However, I need to share something. My faith in humanity has slightly been restored thanks to a lovely lady and her blog. You may have seen something on Facebook about this as the link to her blog has been getting passed around (which is how I found out about it). It's The Blogess. She's done an amazing thing...networked those in need with those who can help. Complete strangers, giving during the time of year that is increasingly being known for it's selfishness and animosity (remember the guy who got trampled to death by holiday shoppers in Wal-Mart?).

Things have been really rough for me and my family, in ways I don't really feel comfortable talking about most of the time. Partially due to the fact that I hate to dwell on these things because frankly they just depress me. The other part is that I hate, absolutely HATE, to ask for help. It's a position I find myself in more and more and it's one that never gets less uncomfortable.

So when lovely people immediately contacted me to offer help, or bought things from my shops in response to my story, I was overwhelmed. I still get misty-eyed thinking about it.

So, just a few days prior to Yule, I may get my holiday wish after all. Which, honestly, was keeping my heat on and feeding myself and my pets.

Happy Holidays everyone, regardless of what you choose to celebrate, and know that there are indeed still good people in this world who celebrate this season of giving the way it was meant to be celebrated.

Wow, I have failed miserably at keeping up with this blog. Did anyone miss me? I guess I just find it easier and more time-effective to use my Facebook fan page these days, especially since there is so much chaos in my personal life right now.

Buddha's Birthday

Yesterday morning I was fortunate enough to attend the Hanamatsuri ceremony at the Cleveland Buddhist Temple. Such a lovely ceremony that is in celebration of the Buddha's birth. I was fortunate enough to be allowed to take photos of the altar, which was stunningly decorated with daisies and irises. I paid my respect to Buddha by bowing and pouring sweet tea over the small statue enclosed in the lovely shrine, which is temporary and only used at this time of year.

10 Great Reasons to Support Local Businesses

I realize there's a slight irony to this since I sell online, but there are some really fantastic reasons to support locally owned businesses over large chain stores. While the price tags may be a touch higher at your local boutique compared to someplace that touts "low everyday prices" ala Wal-Mart, the actual price of shopping in such places can be rather high, especially in the long-term. I won't go into an anti-WalMart rant (I am VERY against shopping there...for more info. on why, check out the documentary "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices"), but I thought that this list (taken from the book "Green Christmas: How to Have a Joyous, Eco-Friendly Holiday Season" by Jennifer Basye Sander and Peter Sander) sums it up very nicely. Their numbers are based on data from Chicago, but I'm sure that upon exploration, the same can be said of many communities.

"1) Keep money in the neighborhood. Studies show that Chicago-owned businesses circulate 70% more money back into the local community per square foot than chain stores."

"2) Embrace what makes us different." Shopping locally can help maintain a neighborhood's local character. Chicago is a great example of this. Each neighborhood has it's own distinct vibe, and local business capture that beautifully.

"3) Get better service." Frequenting a locally owned business can be a truly wonderful experience. It's more personal, and after a while, you build a meaningful business relationship with the owner(s)/employees. There's nothing quite like a big smile from someone behind the counter while they greet you by name.

"4) Create and keep good jobs. Nationally, local businesses are the largest employers and account for the majority of job growth." Locally owned business are less likely to outsource to another country. They have a vested interest in the community that they do business in, and oftentimes live in the very same community, or at least close by.

"5) Promote competition and diversity." Variety is the spice of life, and a bit of healthy competition can mean better products and service for customers.

"6) Less sprawl and environmental damage." A fair majority of locally owned businesses are in already existing buildings. For the small business owner, it's oftentimes more cost-effective to move into a place that is already built rather then clear land and build new. This is also great news for the local ecosystem since it means less disruption of the environment.

"7) Support community organizations. Nonprofits receive an average of 350 percent more support from local business groups then they do from non-locally owned businesses."

"8) Put your taxes to good use." Obviously, if a business exists in a community, then the taxes that business pays go back to the community. They also make much better use of public services in their area.

"9) Small changes mean big impact. An Austin, Texas study showed that if each household redirected just $100 of planned holiday spending from chain stores to locally owned merchants it would create some $10 million in local economic impact." The holidays are the biggest spending season, and what makes or breaks many businesses.

"10) Invest in the community." Again, local business people often live in the community they provide merchandise for, so they have an interest in the health of the community, especially economically. A good business person will support local efforts to improve the economy, as well as other important parts of their neighborhoods. It's just smart business.

I don't mean to knock shopping online in any way, but when choosing where to buy your goods (like groceries, etc), keep these things in mind. :)

A Helpful Website for Those Curious About Common Skincare/Beauty Product Ingredients

In my search to find information on good natural preservatives to use in my products I found a very nice website that is quite helpful. You may wish to take a peek. Remember that just because something is labeled "natural" or "organic" does not mean it really is either of those things. Labeling regulation here in the U.S. is not very good in my opinion, especially when it comes to personal care items. It's amazing what manufacturers can get away with! This is one of the many reasons I began making my own body butters, etc....I have much more control over what goes into my product and therefore onto my skin. I use all of the things I make, and I have some of the fussiest skin you can imagine. If I can use it then most anyone else can!

I hope some of you find this helpful. What we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put into our bodies. Our skin absorbs a great deal, so be good to it!

Goat's Milk Soap with Gently Exfoliating Poppy Seeds

I just love this soap. It started as a custom order for my dad (who I have successfully hooked on my soaps so he no longer uses that awful store bought detergent stuff), and I made a few extra bars. I'm trying to put more "manly" products in my store, as well as offering fragrance oil free items. This soap contains powdered nutmeg for color (with a touch of turmeric sprinkled on top) as well as the exfoliating poppy seeds. It has the slightest touch of spicy scent to it, but I left it otherwise unscented. Great for guys as well as the ladies, this goat's milk soap is nice and gentle.

I will be listing it for sale in my shop soon!

On a more personal note, I have come to face one of the single hardest choices I've had to make in my life up to this point. I had really hoped the outcome would be different, but my hand has almost been forced in the matter. This is going to make life very...interesting...(and hard) so please be patient with me while I figure out what in the world I'm going to do next (and how I'm going to survive).

I just moved my Lemon Oatmeal Soap to my madeitmyself.com shop! I'm in the process of moving items that I don't care to renew again on Etsy to other venues...doesn't hurt to spread your name around. ;) Currently listing on the site is free, which is a big bonus, and featuring your items is also free at this time. I get decent views, the listing process is pretty simple and fast (especially if you just copy and paste your items before they expire), and the price is great. My Artfire is already full, and at this time I cannot justify spending the money on a Premier account, so madeitmyself offers me another place to list things. Also, the commission is only 3%.

Say hi to Dickens (as in he's a little troublemaker). He is one of 3 kittens we saved from our horrible and stupid neighbors. He loves to sit on my chest while I work on my laptop, and he often sleeps there too. His momma was a little gray stray kitty and all 3 babies look just like her. She had 6 kittens total, which is amazing because she was super teeny herself! Two of them don't have full tails, probably because they didn't have enough room in the womb to fully develop. Sadly, they wouldn't surrender the other 3 to us. They were pretty bad off when we got them, their little tummies were all distended and they couldn't have been even 5 weeks old, but they are doing much better now. They still have belly issues, but they are nothing like they were two weeks ago thank goodness. I was worried that one of them wouldn't make it, but he pulled through and is now the chubbiest of them all. That makes 5 kittens in the house, all looking for good homes. I hope we can find them loving people to be with, because we are packed to the max with critters at this point!

Pictured above is my Green Tea Goat's Milk With Unrefined Shea Butter Soap. It's lovely, and gone! I sold it all before I even had a chance to list it. I plan to make more at some point because it turned out really well (I snagged a bar for myself luckily).

Now, on to more somber things. As I celebrate this milestone for my Etsy shop, the victory is tinged with sadness. As most (if not all) of you know, Uleen Toovey (known to her fellow Etsians as Chromasmear) died in a tragic rafting accident this past Saturday. I chatted with her almost every time I was in the chat rooms on Etsy, and she helped me numerous times with links to things I needed or articles/recipes/blogs that would help me make something for my shop. I am sad to say I never had the pleasure of meeting her in person, but online she was lovely, helpful, kind, and generous. It's odd how someone you never met in real life can still leave a void.

Your presence will be missed Chroma. My heart goes out to her family and friends, and also to those who were on the trip with her when her untimely passing occurred. I hope that it was swift and painless, and I find some small comfort in knowing that she was doing something she loved when it happened. I cannot imagine being there, or being the person in charge of the trip.

Rest, and hopefully we'll meet again in that big chat room in the sky.

Some Vegan Yumminess

The sassy, spunky Clem recently asked me for some ideas for vegan dishes, and I figured I would share some of them here so you can all see that vegan doesn't have to be boring.

I'm not vegan, but I do try to eat vegan and buy vegan products as much as possible and I really admire the idea behind the choice. I'm very much for animal rights and planetary health. I got these recipes from a Mercy for Animals booklet. If you are curious about them, you can find them here: MercyForAnimals.org

So, enjoy!

Breakfast Scramble

1 tbsp. vegetable oil
1/2 lb. sausage substitute
1/2 onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb. firm tofu, drained and crumbled
1 tomato, diced
1 tsp. turmeric
1/2 tsp. garlic salt
2 green onions, minced

Heat oil in a skillet. Add the sausage substitute, onion, and garlic and fry until browned. Add the tofu, tomato, turmeric, and garlic salt and saute for 5 minutes. Add green onions during the last minute of cooking.

Blueberry Muffins

3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
3/4 cup unbleached white flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 tbsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. sea salt
egg replacer (equivalent to 1 egg)
1 cup rice or soy milk
1/3 cup maple syrup
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Mix all dry ingredients. In another bowl, mix all the wet ones. Stir the wet into the dry without over-mixing. Oil a muffin tin and spoon in the batter, filling the cups 2/3 full. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes.

Crunchy Veg Wraps

4 tbsp non-dairy cream cheese (try the Tofutti brand...it's yummy)
4 10-inch flour tortillas
1 cup shredded spinach
1/4 cup alfalfa sprouts
1/2 cup shredded red cabbage
1/2 cup sliced avocado
1/4 cup chopped tomatoes
1/2 cup diced cucumbers
2 tbsp finely diced red onion
salt and pepper, to taste

Spread 1 tbsp. of cream cheese over each tortilla. Sprinkle an even amount of the remaining ingredients on each wrap and roll up.

"Cheese Steak" Sandwiches

1 tbsp. olive oil
1 medium-sized yellow onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 medium-sized red bell pepper, seeded and cut into thin strips
8 oz. seitan (available at health food stores), sliced thin
1 tbsp. vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (available at health food stores)
salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
4 oz. soy mozzarella cheese, shredded
2 6-to-7 inch sub rolls

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper, cover, and cook, stirring a few times, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the seitan and cook, turning once, until lightly browned on both sides, about 5 minutes. Add Worcestershire sauce and season to taste with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with the soy cheese and allow it to melt.

Split the rolls lenghtwise and fill with the seitan and cheese mixture. Serve hot.

Fried "Chicken"

1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 cups unbleached flour
4 tbsp. nutritional yeast (optional)
3 tbsp. yellow mustard
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp. baking powder
1 lb. mock chicken (try Worthington Foods Chic-Ketts or White Wave wheat meat)
3-1/2 cups vegetable oil

Mix together the salt, onion powder, pepper, garlic powder, flour, and nutritional yeast in a deep bowl. In a separate bowl, dilute the mustard with 1/2 cup water. Add 1/3 cup of the flour mixture to the mustard mixture and stir. Add the baking powder to the dry flour mixture and mix.

Dip chunks of the mock chicken into the mustard batter, then drop each chunk into the flour mixture and coat with the desired amount of "crust". Fry the chunks in hot oil on medium-high heat in a large skillet or deep fryer until crispy and golden brown, turning as needed.

Poor little blog. I haven't been giving you the love you deserve.

I'm still trying to settle in and deal with the emotional side of this whole moving affair, but I did finally manage to list some new items in my shop, which I am very pleased about. I still have a fair amount more to list on Etsy, and some to move over to Artfire, so that should keep me busy-ish. I have some things to photograph as well.

I'm considering doing home parties. Has anyone tried this? Could be fun once in a while.

Recently my dad and I went on a tour of historic Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland. It's an amazing place, and I have already listed one photo from the day. You guys just got a sneak peek of another one before it's listed!

I'm in Cleveland again. I arrived here Sunday evening, very tired and quite unhappy about the whole moving business. I'm still getting settled, and half of the things I brought with me are still in my van as I'm not quite sure where to put them in the house yet.

I have a few new items to list, as well as things to photograph, so hopefully I will get those taken care of within the next day or two. Tomorrow I'm going on a tour of Lakeview Cemetary, which is just awesome and huge. I plan on taking mucho pictures.

I sat down today and figured out just how much money from my business I have directly contributed to the running of the household since one my husband's bitches is that I never help him financially (among a long list of other things, all basically b.s. by the way).

I added everything up from just my PayPal account since getting my debit card, and it turns out that I actually, if you average that total out over the past 3 months, match if not very slightly exceed what he gives me for the household. (When I say household I mean anything having to do with keeping us alive and comfortable, from pet food and supplies to toilet paper, groceries, gas, laundry etc) Also, if I were to get a part-time, minimum wage job I would be making LESS on average than I currently make with my Etsy shop. And this is after no paid advertising (other then some sample swaps, which I haven't actually done in well over a month) and spending the absolute bare minimum on supplies and equipment.

My business is sputtering along, but it is obviously doing better then even I thought.

And also, I have been working in my undies. How's that for awesome?

So I will soon be packing for my move back to Cleveland. I have to say I'm feeling rather insecure about this in a great number of ways, and I doubt any real reassurance will be forthcoming. Nothing like being stared at like a monkey doing a math problem when you mention trips home! Makes a girl feel so loved and wanted, let me tell you.

On the other hand, I will be beyond glad to get away from this hellhole of negativity, stupidity, and backstabbing. I've met a handful of genuinely nice people here, and I mean none of this toward you, but my experience here has been basically one big pile of crap from the first day I found out my husband planned on staying here permanently.

I wake up every day wishing we hadn't left TN. While I was very lonely there too, at least things were a great deal more equitable, and I saw a hell of a lot more potential for us as a couple and our future there. It's been very one-sided since we left, and I'm done with that. Plus, I refuse to give up my cats. I will not give this place one more ounce of my blood or soul. It doesn't deserve it.

So, yeah, moving back to Cleveland is exciting me a hell of a lot more then it should, and otherwise would under different circumstances. I plan to spend as much time with people I haven't seen in a while and I'm sure my dad will be happy to have me around for a while.

In business news I have a domain name, now I just need to learn to build the site. A lovely friend has sent me software with templates, so I will probably launch that soon after arriving back in Cleveland (I refuse to call it home, as Chicago is the only place that has ever really felt like home to me). I would like an alternative to Etsy for selling, as that venue, while I have met a great deal of lovely people and mostly enjoy it, has made some decisions and admin runs things in ways that are not very business saavy and I don't want to put all of my eggs in one basket. Plus it will be nice to sell things and not have someone take a cut, above and beyond the monthly fee. It's a dot net, because I wanted to keep the name the same to avoid confusion and the dot com was already taken.

Anyway, it's time to go get some caffeine to try and wake myself up. I'm dragging butt today.

I somewhat recently did a custom order for some wedding favors for someone and they were incredibly happy with the end result. I did some jasmine shea butter and rose petal glycerin soap samples wrapped in beige and brown tulle for them and I think they turned out rather nicely. Pretty, simple, and practical.

She gave me the feedback for her order today, and it was very nice. My favorite part was the photo she sent of the favor display (the bottom image).

I've met some absolutely wonderful people, and I really don't want to leave, but I have to say there are times where I'm disappointed with the site and how admin handles communication. Especially of important policy changes. I really hope they get their crap together, but I was hoping the same thing after the renewing/relisting debacle. Let's hope that two strikes is all it takes, because I'd hate to see anything bad happen to the site I like so much most of the time.

I've been toying with listing on other venues, and I may still, but I just obtained a domain name and will hopefully have the skeleton of a running website up by the end of next week. I may just wait and put half my eggs in that basket. I don't want to spread myself too thin, but I'd also like to give people the option to buy directly from me without having to set up a buyer account, which some people do not want to do, and I respect their choice.

In other news, I love how it's totally okay for credit card companies to bend us over without the benefit of lube OR dinner first.

I really meant to get more done today, but it always seems like time slips away from me. I have one hell of a time adjusting to Daylight Savings...my body is on the same schedule, but the clocks mock me with that one less hour until my internal engines readjust.

It also doesn't help that I seem to have acquired some very unpleasant gi bug. I hope it passes soon (uh, no pun intended) because I have a bunch of stuff I want to finish and being constantly interrupted doesn't work when you've just melted some ingredients and need to mix everything before it sets.

He's my kitty husband, and regularly likes to remind that biped I married that he was here first. His favorite way of doing that is by doing "happy paws" on my husband's throat. It's all part of his secret plan to kill Ash so he can have me all to himself again.

I've been meaning to update on new stuff for my shop...I've posted a fair amount, and have a fair pile more to add. Not to mention a rather huge to-do list that I almost find daunting. Almost.

Some new fragrances are: Fresh Cut Grass, Cinnamon Buns, Ylang Ylang, Brown Sugar and Fig, Raspberry Lemonade, Witch's Brew, Fresh Laundry, White Tea and Ginger, Berries and Cream, Cinnamon and Apple Orchard. They all smell absolutely divine! The Cinnamon and Ylang Ylang smell like the natural stuff which is great.

I also will soon have soymilk soap (for you vegans out there), shaving soap, a new honey sweetened glycerin, and more shampoo soaps.

There's fresh cut re-batched goat's milk scented with green tea and mandarin sitting on my cutting board as we speak.

So yeah, a bit of a "new, cool stuff" type of announcement.

Now, time to list some items and then work on those interview questions!

I just got back from a rather large show this past weekend in New Jersey and I am completely whooped.

I didn't sell a whole bunch, which is sort of a bummer, but I had a really good time. It was so nice to do something that's more my thing. I've missed having fun and being social, and definitely need to be able to travel more and see the people I care about.

I'll post more later, and maybe even some pictures. I didn't get to take nearly as many as I would have liked, but I'm sure that other people made up for it. I'll try to find the link to the albums that other people have posted, for those who might be curious. I also have a bunch of new things to list, and more in the works.
